I'll never forget my father's last words: "My only regret is I never won Wimbledon". It came as quite a shock, because he'd never shown any interest in tennis. He didn't even own a racket. Maybe he was delirious from the pain, or maybe he'd spent his entire life harbouring this secret ambition, too embarassed to say anything for fear of upsetting my mother.
